PM Modi pays tribute to Veer Savarkar on his 58th death anniversary

Nagpur, Maharashtra, February 26, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects today to renowned freedom fighter and social reformer Veer Savarkar on the occasion of his 58th death anniversary.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi wrote, “Tributes to the indomitable Veer Savarkar on his Punya Tithi. His unwavering spirit and fight for a free India continues to inspire generations.” (Translation)

Savarkar, born Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, was a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement. He was imprisoned by the British for his revolutionary activities and spent many years in cellular jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He also authored several books and poems, advocating for Indian independence and social reform.

While PM Modi’s statement acknowledges Savarkar’s contributions, it is important to note that Savarkar’s legacy remains a subject of debate. Some historians and scholars laud his dedication to the freedom struggle, while others raise concerns about his later political views, particularly his advocacy for Hindutva, a concept associated with Hindu nationalism.
